Yes, people are still losing the awnings on their RVs as they travel down the highway.
To solve that problem, the roller must be prevented from turning.
The manufacturer's "brake" sometimes fails to do that, often with near-disastrous results.
Tying the awning's arms together does absolutely nothing to prevent the roller from turning.
