Yes, people are still losing the awnings on their RVs as they travel down the highway.

To solve that problem, the roller must be prevented from turning.

The manufacturer's "brake" sometimes fails to do that, often with near-disastrous results.

Tying the awning's arms together does absolutely nothing to prevent the roller from turning.

One way to stop the roller tube from turning and the fabric from unfurling is to install an RV Awning Travel Lock. Installation is relatively easy and can be performed in under an hour.

Lost Awnings Continue!

Just yesterday, I received an email from a customer who had traded off his old coach with an RV Awning Travel Lock installed and got a brand new Winnebago.

The new coach had a Carefree power awning installed. Unfortunately, if came unfurled on this customer's trip home to Florida and caused about $5,000 damage to the nearly-new coach.

Because this awning had been relatively trouble free, there is not a model of RV Awning Travel Lock which fits this awning. But the trouble free era appears to be over; I've heard of many which have failed.

My advice: use your ingenuity to come up with a way to keep that roller tube from turning!

If you happen to lose yours, you'll be sorry you didn't spend a little time thinking about it.

Summer RVing Season Arrives

Today is Memorial Day, the day set aside to honor those who died fighting in our wars. These days, we consider it a day to honor those who fought to defend our freedom but it was originally created to honor the dead of the Civil War.

It also is considered the beginning of the summer recreation season and that certainly includes camping. We all look forward to a season of good camping weather so we can go forth and enjoy the freedoms which have been retained for us.

We're free to travel the entire country in our RVs. And that is great, isn't it!

But we also are "free" to lose our awning to a gust of wind as we travel down the road. That is, most of us are at-risk for this event.

We believe that those with Carefree electrically-operated awnings are probably immune. (Their company information says that is the case, and so far we believe them.) Those with other models and brands are vulnerable.

Please understand that not everyone will lose their awning. You might RV for years and years and never lose your awning. Of course if you know that you will not lose it, there is no need to spend a few bucks to install an RV Awning Travel Lock. In a similar manner, if you know you will never have an accident, there is no need to purchase insurance.

Losing your awning can vary from simply unrolling a few feet to totally ripping the awning and mounts from your coach, resulting in goodness-only-knows how much other damage.

I've sold lots of RV Awning Travel Locks to those in the first class. The are thankful it wasn't any worse and become believers real fast.

I also have customers in the second class. Just like me, they do not want to ever have such an experience again! Once is too many times.

Certainly I don't expect you to take my word for it. (Because "I'm trying to sell you something," right?) Take a look on some of the popular RV forums, like rv.net or the forum for your brand of RV. Search for "awning lock" or "lost awning" and see what you find!

One thing you'll find there: People continue to assert that tying the support arms together so they so they can't come apart will prevent your awning from being lost.

During these days of uncertain economic conditions, RVers may be tempted to get by with what they have and avoid purchasing anything they consider "unnecessary."
